5 Ways to be Happy Alone

Human connection is more than necessary, it is something we thrive on. We need other people in our lives to be there for us through our ups and downs in this crazy roller coaster we call “life.” They are our support system and the people we turn to for love and guidance. And although, these human connections such as family, friends and significant others are incredibly important, we may sometimes rely too heavily on them to be happy, resulting in an unhealthy dependence upon them. Happiness is something that comes from within us rather than an external entity such as our friends, family or significant others. Our love for them is certainly a part of our happiness but it’s not the only part. It’s important that we become our own best friend right now and through this become happy overall. Here are my five tips to be happy alone.

1. Know your worth:

Some people think that if everyone were to be considered as special then no one would be special, but this is simply not the case. A person is much like a snowflake. No design is ever the same. We all have different experiences, talents, strengths that makes us different from each other. Thus, we each have something to contribute to the world.

Personally, I am a firm believer that we are all sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father who has put time and energy into creating each and every one of us. Whenever I think about how the Lord Himself created every part of me and then brought me into existence, I realize that my worth to Him is beyond my comprehension. Thus, it is an insult to Him to nag on my looks and capabilities. I need to value myself as He does. Knowing our worth is the first step to being happy with ourselves.

2. Revive Old Hobbies & Discover New Ones:

Hobbies are one of the greatest things we can have. They don’t just fill time, they are our outlets and a way to bring peace to mind and body. There may be some of you who are afraid of trying a new hobby due to the fear of failure, but that shouldn’t stop you. I implore you to make a list of all the new hobbies you want to try and just DO IT.

Hobbies allow us to creatively explore our world while boosting our confidence in our abilities. I am a person that enjoys dabbling in several different hobbies including art. Sometimes after a long day when I have been feeling blue, I will start creating a mosaic piece. This helps to bring peace to my mind as the beautiful pattern of colors start to unfold as a bigger picture design. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and at the same time it boosts my self-confidence.

3. Spend More Time Outdoors:

There is something about nature that brings such inner peace. I believe that exploring the world around us through our five senses has a great effect on our mood. And we don’t have to be vacationing on a tropical island or living in a magical forest in order to do this. Until recently, I never understood morning people.

I didn’t understand how they could want to get up early when they could enjoy more sleep. However, as I began to work earlier in the morning, I realized that I have missed out on experiencing so many beautiful sights and sounds. As I drove to work every morning I would enjoy seeing the sun rise above the red mountain as it displayed all manner of colors. This site would give me a feeling of absolute awe. Currently, I enjoy getting up early on the weekends drinking hot chocolate and sitting outside in the morning with the freshly crisp air, watching the sun continue to rise and hearing the birds singing their morning melodies. This is an example of the very simple ways to enjoy the outdoors. You could also go for a walk, enjoy a picnic, or even go for a drive .

4. Be Spontaneous:

Have you ever decided to randomly go somewhere or do something and have it turn out to be one of the moments you treasure? I have found that the best moments often come from a spontaneous action. These actions could include trying something new, going to a place you’ve never been before, or simply doing something different from your regular routine.

For instance, there was a time I was very isolated from my friends and family because I was cooped up inside all day studying for my college exams. It was a Friday night and I had just about enough with my studies. At that moment I decided that I was going to take a break and have some Friday night fun with just myself. I changed out of my normal clothes and put on a crazy Onesie and ordered a medium Philly Cheese Steak pizza from Dominoes to which I ate while watching the live action Cinderella (2015). That has become one of my treasured memories to this day.

5. Engage in Spiritually:

This is a very personal part of who we are and it could be expressed differently for everyone. This allows us to slow down, take a moment in the quiet to reflect and to obtain inner peace.

Thus, engage in spirituality, whatever that means to you whether it be praying, reading scriptures, taking a walk in nature, meditating, or journaling. Often, the most tranquil moments are found here as they help us to become stronger and happier from within.

My friends, you deserve to be happy. Allow yourself to be your own best friend and to grow that happiness within you. There is more to you than you realize and you need to discover that for yourself. You have so much potential and a great support system behind you. Love yourself and let it shine through!
