A Short Message on Gratitude

During times of depression and anxiety, it can be difficult to appreciate the wonderful people and things in our lives. With the current pandemic especially, it is easy to only perceive the negative circumstances brought on by Covid-19. I, for instance, have a tendency of looking only at the negative rather than appreciating the positive. Instead of viewing those things that I should be grateful for, I sometimes only perceive the trials that make my life challenging. Due to this, I sometimes view life as dark and dreary, when I shouldn’t. Many of us have been very blessed with amazing people who care about us so deeply. There are also many of us who have been blessed to live in a free country where we can pursue our dreams. As Professor Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter, has said, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” We all have things to be grateful for whether it be family, friends, significant others, jobs, education, pets, religion, beautiful weather, or all of the above. There is no doubt that we will go through hard times; trials are inevitable. It’s OK to be discouraged, angry or sad during these times but we should always remember and appreciate those who make us strong.
