Enjoy the Simple Things Again

I feel as though in childhood many of us were naturally happy because of the way we viewed the world with great optimism and wonder. We could look at the ocean and marvel at the vast horizon. We could ride our bicycles around the neighborhood and feel as though we were flying. We could listen to a piece of music and get swept away in it. Whenever I take a moment to reflect on my childhood, I feel immensely grateful for the carefree, wondrous and loving environment I grew up in.

There is a chorus from a song titled “A Million Dreams” from the movie The Greatest Showman that reminds me of a much younger version of myself:

“Every night I lie in bed, the brightest colors fill my head, a million dreams are keeping me awake. I think of what the world could be, the vision of the one I see. A million dreams is all it’s going to take. A million dreams for the world we’re going to make.”

Children are resilient and find light where others see only darkness. They find joy in the simplest things in life that adults often take for granted. And as we have grown into these adults, we may have lost the ability to enjoy these simple things ourselves. Fortunately, we can regain this ability.

My friends bask in each day! Don’t numb your mind with only cell phones, laptops and televisions but instead enjoy the world around you. Look at the sun and experience euphoria as it sets, the sky painted with many colors. Listen to music that carries you away to another world. Sit with family and friends around a campfire and allow the company to fill your heart with joy. Eat some homemade chips and salsa and let your taste buds dance as each flavor comes together harmoniously. Observe the stars at night and admire this great and spacious world.

My friends, I understand that these days are stressful and even scary, but we should always remember to view the world through the eyes of a child with great optimism and wonder. If we continuously fill our very short life with cherished moments, then it will be a life well-lived. We are so blessed with this wonderful world. Let’s all enjoy the simple things together again!
