All You Need is Love: A Short Message

A couple weeks ago I visited my grandmother, who lives in another state. It had been a while since I had last seen her due to COVID-19. I wanted to make sure that when I saw her the pandemic was coming to a close and I had my first vaccine shot. We had spent most of the day together preparing for a wedding we would be attending. It was a wonderful day filled with great moments of laughter and fun.

She had us get our pictures taken at a photo booth and said "we are making memories that will last forever." It reminded me of a phrase that she would often say, "each moment that passes becomes a memory, that is why we need to cherish them." And we certainly did cherish every moment we spend together.

That night we decided to watch a comedy called Click. It is an Adam Sandler movie about a hard working man who prioritizes work before family trying to achieve the American Dream. I watched it as a kid and thought it was hilarious but watching it as an adult, I had a much different reaction...

*WARNING: SPOILER ALERT! Skip to the next section if you don't want to know the plot of the movie*

The Movie

The protagonist, Michael (Adam Sandler) dedicated his life to his work but never received the recognition he deserved. He wanted to prove himself and make it big within the company so he could afford the materialistic things that his parents couldn't. He wanted to give his children the life that he didn't have, while simultaneously missing out on the important moments.

One night, he received a universal remote that allowed him control his universe. It allowed him to fast forward through family dinners, BBQs, conversations with his wife and all the little moments he thought were insignificant. Due to this, the remote was designed to remember his preferences and it would automatically fast forward through all of the same moments that he had fast forward through before.

Unfortunately, he had missed a great deal of his children's lives, all to receive the promotion at his job. By the middle of the movie, his wife had divorced him, his father had past away, and his kids, now adults, were not close to him. When he used the universal remote to see how all this had happened, it showed that he was on "autopilot."

He saw that his entire life was spent at work and any time he had with the family, he was not engaging nor loving. At the end, he realized he had wasted his life trying to fill it with materialistic items for his family, when all they really wanted was for him to be there physically, mentally and emotionally. Fortunately, he was given another chance to make it right and was taken back to the beginning of the movie. He received the remote again but he threw it away and instead made changes to spend more time with his family.

My Thoughts

Watching this as an adult made me realize how precious our time is. We work to live and provide for our families, but we shouldn't make work a higher priority than our family/loved ones. Life is so short and it tends to go by incredibly fast. It doesn't matter what career you have, what car you drive or the amount of money in your pocket. At the end of the day, life is about our loved ones.

Each moment that seems insignificant is actually one of the most precious moments in our lifetime. Remember those moments when you were sitting on the porch talking to your grandparents? The moments when you and your mom spent the day together? The moments when your dad made you laugh? The moments where you were wrapped in your significant other's arms? Or when your little ones greeted you and told you about the rainbow unicorn they painted today?

Those are all very precious! Your loved ones make up the most beautiful parts of your life! Love is the greatest treasure in the world and nothing can match the value of it because it is priceless. If we can just remember this continually, we can live more fully.

My friends, it is high-time that we make memories with our loved ones! Love is all we need and time is precious. So let's make the most of it!
